"GreenTips" is a monthly Kiplinger Recommends feature from Greener World Media Inc., which writes environmental news and advice for business in a variety of Web-based publications, including GreenBiz.com, GreenerBuildings, ClimateBiz and GreenerComputing.

This month's author is Joel Makower, the executive editor of Greener World Media and a writer and strategist on corporate sustainability practices and clean technology.
Pressed by escalating costs on one side and a likely drop-off of business on the other, many companies are frantically trying to save where they can -- and energy is often the first and biggest target. But doing so can be difficult, especially for smaller businesses.

There are so many questions and worries, many specific to the type of business involved. How can a manufacturer save more without producing less? Is it worth investing in alternative energies? Conservation techniques and energy saving devices can require a huge investment -- can I get financial help?

In this month's GreenTips column, the executive editor of Greener World Media, Joel Makower, gives businesses tips on where to turn for information, advice and even money. "There's a lot of help out there, much of it low-cost or free, if only you know where to look," Makower writes. "… This is by no means comprehensive. … But it points to a handful of approaches and resources that appear to be well-kept secrets for the vast majority of companies I hear from."
